Are you in the market for a new roof? Getting a metal roof installed by an experienced, professional roofing company is one of the best decisions you can make for the safety and longevity of your home.
Our metal roofing contractors have over 100 years of combined experience installing metal roofs. We break down the benefits of a metal roof and explain the different types.
Benefits of Metal Roofs
Metal roofing has come a long way. There are tons of different options, from shingles to ribbed metal roofs, and a wide range of colors.
These metal roofs don't just look like one giant metal slab on top of your house. They have style: they're modern, sleek, and can match the personality of your home. Looks aside, there are serious benefits to metal roofs.
Some of the best benefits of getting a metal roof installed include:
Durability. Metal roofs last a long time. A high-quality metal roof lasts anywhere from 40-70 years. Compared to the average 12-20 year lifespan of an asphalt roof, you can start to see the obvious choice, here. (Also, if you choose to work with Shield Exteriors, we provide an accident free double lifetime warranty!)
Low maintenance. Metal roofs require little to no maintenance, especially when compared to other types of roof material. Really, all it needs is a good clean every year or so to get rid of any built-up dirt and debris to keep it looking nice.
Variety of looks and colors. Like we said before, this isn't just putting a blank, metal slab on your roof. You can choose between metal shingles, a metal ribbed roof, or a standing seam. There are also tons of different colors to choose, from a bright red to a warm tan or a nice shade of green.
Environmentally friendly. Metal roofing materials are 100% recyclable. Also, depending on the type of metal roof you choose, they typically contain up to 40% of recycled steel. Compared to asphalt roofing, which ends up in a landfill, metal roofs are a much more environmentally-friendly choice.
Weather-resistant. Metal roofs are highly weather resistant. For one, a metal roof sheds snow instead of holding onto it like an asphalt shingle roof. Also, a metal roof is usually able to withstand over 100 mph winds.
Disadvantages of Metal Roofs
Honestly, there are barely any disadvantages to getting a metal roof. We know we're a bit biased since we're a metal roofing company, but this really is one of those situations where the pros far outweigh the few cons.
The only disadvantages to metal roofs are:
Price. The up-front cost of a metal roof could be double or triple the cost of an asphalt shingle roof. We know that's a huge price gap, but hear us out! Metal roofs can last anywhere from 40-70 years, while you only get about 12-20 years out of an asphalt roof. So, while the initial metal roof installation is more expensive, you won't have to replace it nearly as often as an asphalt roof. (Plus, we offer an accident free double lifetime warranty and financing with as little as $0 down.)
Noise. By default, metal roofs will be a bit louder in a rainstorm. However, additional insulation can be added if you're worried about any noise.
Types of Metal Roof Installations
There are a few different types of metal roofs you can choose from. The one that's best for you all depends on your budget, and how you want your new roof to look!
Imperial Ribbed Metal Ribbed Roof
This is the most popular metal roof we install here at Shield Exteriors.
Ribbed metal roofs are the most affordable type of metal roof — the price is comparable to asphalt shingles, yet it lasts twice as long. The installation process is easier and quicker than other types of metal roofs, yet it offers the same durability and longevity.
Ribbed metal roofs use external fasteners to secure each metal panel. Sometimes, these can get worn out and might require replacement down the line.
Standing Seam Metal Roof
Standing seam metal roofs offer a more sleek, modern look than a ribbed metal roof. You'll get even more durability than a ribbed metal roof, but with a bit more of a luxurious feel to it.
The main difference between a standing seam metal roof and a ribbed metal roof is how the panels are fastened: the metal panels are attached with clasps that are hidden by metal trim pieces. This means there aren't any screws exposed to the elements.
The standing seam metal roof is a perfect option if you're interested in adding solar panels or snow retention options, as it serves as a strong base for installation.

How Much Does a Metal Roof Cost in Indiana?
The cost of a metal roof in Indiana depends on the type of metal roof you choose to have installed, and how large your home is.
How Long Does a Metal Roof Last?
A metal roof can last 40-70+ years! They don't require much maintenance, though ribbed metal roofs might need some of the fasteners changed out here and there. Plus, the warranty we offer on every roof installed by Shield Exteriors will take care of any damage throughout the life of your roof!
What is the Cheapest Metal Roof?
The cheapest metal roof is a ribbed metal roof. While it's the most affordable metal roof option, it's still incredibly durable and long-lasting.
Is It Cheaper to Put on a Metal Roof Than an Asphalt Shingle Roof?
If we just look at the upfront costs, a metal roof is more expensive than an asphalt shingle roof. However, looking at the lifetime of both roofs: you'll need to replace an asphalt shingle roof every 10-20 years. A metal roof lasts 40-70 years and will likely be the only roof you'll ever need to purchase.
So, even though a metal roof is more expensive to purchase than an asphalt shingle roof, you'll save a lot more money in the long run by investing in a stronger, more durable roof. And you won't have to buy two or three during the life of your home or pay to maintain it like you do with an asphalt shingle roof.
Can You Install a Metal Roof Over Shingles?
Yep! A metal roof can be installed over shingles. This is helpful because you don't always have to pay to have your entire asphalt shingle roof removed. Plus, it adds another layer of protection.
